Linen Clothing Manufacturer Case Study
Custom Heavyweight & Double-Faced Linen Fabric Program (200g+)

A US-based direct-to-consumer fashion brand asked Linenwind to develop a heavier, double-faced linen fabric for an autumn/winter capsule, then turn it into a four-style collection. MOQ: 60 pcs per style.

A heavyweight double-faced linen overshirt developed for a US brand's autumn/winter capsule.

1. Client Background

Client Type: Direct-to-Consumer Fashion Brand

Market: United States, with selected EU stockists

Brand Positioning: Mid-premium natural-fibre essentials with a growing autumn/winter line

Product Category: Heavyweight linen overshirts, structured shirts, and layering pieces

The brand had built its early growth on lighter summer linen, and it wanted to carry that natural-fibre identity into the colder half of the year instead of switching to wool or synthetics. The problem was the fabric itself: the mid-weight linen it had used for spring read too light and too soft for autumn, and it did not hold a silhouette. The buyer needed a heavier, more structured linen, and it needed a manufacturer that could develop the fabric, not only cut and sew it.

2. Project Objective

  • Develop a custom heavyweight linen fabric above 200 GSM as the base for an autumn/winter capsule
  • Add a double-faced construction so the inside face reads as finished as the outside
  • Balance drape and structure so the fabric holds a silhouette without feeling stiff
  • Keep fabric weight and hand feel consistent across the full colour programme
  • Control shrinkage so the heavier pieces stay dimensionally stable after washing
  • Start at a manageable MOQ to test the heavier direction before scaling it

3. Product Overview

Product Types: Double-faced linen overshirt, heavyweight structured shirt, boxy jacket-style layer, heavyweight wide-leg trousers

Target Channels: Brand DTC website plus selected EU stockists

Season: Autumn/Winter capsule

Priority: Fabric weight consistency, clean double-faced finishing, drape-structure balance, and stable sizing for online fit

4. Custom Requirements

Because the collection was led by the fabric rather than by a print or a trim, the brief fixed the material first and the styling second. The fabric standard had to hold before any pattern work began.

  • Heavyweight linen developed in the 200-260 GSM range for the winter-facing styles
  • A double-faced construction so both faces are clean and wear-ready without lining
  • Pre-wash / garment wash finishing to stabilise shrinkage on the heavier panels
  • A custom colour programme with lab-dip approval checked on the actual heavyweight base
  • Pattern making and grading for US sizing, with EU sizing added for the stockist range
  • Controlled tolerances on chest, body length, sleeve and hem so the heavier cloth does not distort the fit
  • Woven main labels, size labels and care labels listing fibre content and wash guidance
  • A locked hand-feel and GSM standard so every colourway matches the approved reference
  • MOQ: 60 pcs per style, matching our standard minimum order quantity for custom linen clothing
  • Total Styles: 4 styles for the first heavyweight capsule

5. Linenwind Heavyweight Fabric Development Solution

We treated this as a fabric project before it became a garment project. The weight, weave density and finishing route were developed and approved first, because a heavier linen behaves differently on the cutting table and in the wash than the lighter cloth the brand already knew. The buyer compared fabric fundamentals in our complete guide to linen fabric for fashion brands before the final GSM and weave were locked.

For the double-faced construction, we worked to two clean faces rather than a lined shell, so the inside of every overshirt and jacket-style layer reads as finished as the outside. Sampling ran 10-14 days in two rounds: the first round confirmed the weave, hand feel and drape-structure balance on the heavier base, and the second round checked colour across the programme and dimensional stability after washing.

Bulk production ran 28-35 days. Handling heavier cloth adds real operations to the line, so inline checks covered GSM and hand-feel spot checks, panel distortion, seam behaviour and hardware, followed by final inspection for measurements, workmanship, labels and packing at AQL 2.5.

7. Results & Feedback

The developed fabric carried the whole capsule, so the collection read as one coherent winter range.

  • All 4 styles were delivered on schedule and within the agreed measurement tolerances
  • GSM and hand feel stayed constant across the colour programme, so no style read lighter than the others
  • The double-faced finish removed the need for lining and hid no raw wrong side, simplifying the brand's own finishing
  • Two styles were reordered for the following winter on the same locked fabric specification
"We knew exactly what we wanted the fabric to do, but not how to get there. The part that mattered was that Linenwind developed the weight and the double-faced construction before we talked about styling. Every colour came back feeling like the sample, and the pieces finally sit the way winter clothing should."

8. Why This Case Matters

  • Shows how linen can carry an autumn/winter range when the fabric weight and construction are developed, not just sewn
  • Demonstrates that GSM consistency and post-wash stability are the real risks in heavyweight linen
  • Confirms a low-risk test at 60 pcs per style before scaling a fabric-led collection
  • Provides a repeatable heavier-linen specification for future cold-season drops
