What is the difference between OEM and ODM in garment manufacturing?

OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturing) means you provide the design and we produce — you own the spec. ODM (Original Design Manufacturing) means we design and produce based on your concept — we co-own or you license the developed design. In practical terms: OEM = "I have a tech pack, make it" vs ODM = "I have an idea, design it and make it." At Linenwind, we offer both models, and most boutique brands start with ODM before transitioning to OEM as they mature. Below is the full breakdown of costs, ownership, lead times, and which model suits each stage of your brand's growth.

OEM vs ODM vs OBM — The 3 Service Models Explained

OEM — Original Equipment Manufacturing

You design, we produce. You send a tech pack (sketch, measurements, fabric spec, construction details). We source materials, cut, sew, finish, and deliver. You own the design IP. Best for brands with in-house designers or pattern makers who know exactly what they want. MOQ starts at 60 pcs. Sampling: 7–14 days.

ODM — Original Design Manufacturing

We design, you approve. You share your concept (references, mood board, target customer). Our in-house design team creates sketches, selects fabrics, develops patterns, and produces samples. You review and we refine. You get a custom design without needing a designer on staff. Sampling: 7–14 days from concept approval.

OBM — Original Brand Manufacturing

We design, we produce, you brand. We develop original collections (designs owned by us) that you can private-label with your brand name. Lowest MOQ path — sometimes as low as 30–60 pcs per SKU. Limited design exclusivity (same design may be offered to other brands in non-competing markets). Best for market entry or seasonal filler pieces.

Which Model Fits Your Brand Stage?

1

Launch Stage (0–6 months) → OBM or ODM

If this is your first collection and you don't have an in-house designer, start with OBM (choose from existing designs) or ODM (we design from your concept). You avoid the upfront cost of pattern making ($200–$500 per style) and sampling iterations. Linenwind's OBM path with 30 pcs MOQ lets you test 3–5 styles for under $2,000 total investment. At this stage: OBM is fastest, ODM is most flexible.

2

Growth Stage (6–18 months) → OEM or ODM with IP transfer

Once you've validated your best-selling styles and built a customer base, shift to OEM. You own the tech pack and patterns, which means you can switch manufacturers without starting from scratch. If you started with ODM, negotiate IP transfer for your top-performing designs. At this stage: OEM gives you supply chain independence.

3

Scale Stage (18+ months) → OEM + Mix

With proven styles in OEM production, you can add ODM for seasonal capsule collections (new designs without hiring full-time designers) and keep OBM for fast-fill basics. Most established Linenwind clients run a hybrid model: 60% OEM (core collection), 25% ODM (seasonal drops), 15% OBM (filler/experimental). At this stage: hybrid model maximizes margin and design capacity.

Real-World Scenarios: Which Model Fits Your Situation

Scenario 1 — European Resort Wear Brand Launch: A startup brand in Greece wants to launch 4 linen shirt styles for summer 2027. They have mood boards but no tech packs and no designer on staff. For them, ODM is the obvious choice — Linenwind's design team creates patterns from their references, produces samples, and the brand approves. Total design-to-bulk time: approximately 5 weeks. Total investment for 4 styles × 60 pcs: under $5,000. If they instead hired a freelance designer ($2,000–$4,000) and went OEM, they'd spend more upfront and take 7–9 weeks.

Scenario 2 — US DTC Brand Expanding to Linen: An established DTC brand in California that already produces cotton t-shirts wants to add a linen button-down to their lineup. They have a tech pack from their existing garment designer. For them, OEM is the right fit — send the tech pack to Linenwind, we sample, they approve, we bulk produce. Their per-unit cost is lower than ODM (no design fee amortized) and they own the pattern for future reorders with any factory.

Scenario 3 — Australian Boutique Testing Linen Essentials: An Australian boutique retailer with 3 physical stores wants to test 5 linen styles with minimal capital risk. They choose OBM — Linenwind's existing designs with their private label. MOQ drops to 30 pcs per style, per-unit cost is $3–$5 lower than OEM, and total first order is approximately $2,000–$3,000. If the styles sell well, they can graduate to ODM or OEM for exclusivity and IP ownership once they prove the demand.

Cost Comparison: OEM vs ODM for a 60-Piece Trial Run

Cost ItemOEMODMOBM
Design/tech pack creation$0 (you provide)$200–$500 (included)$0 (existing design)
Pattern making + grading$150–$300 (if we grade)Included ✅$50–$100 (minor mods)
Sample (1st piece)$50–$80$40–$70$30–$50
Sample revisions (avg 2)$60–$120$50–$100$30–$60
Bulk production (60 pcs)$720–$1,080$720–$1,080$600–$900
Total upfront (1st order)$980–$1,580$1,010–$1,750$710–$1,110
Total per unit (amortized)$16–$26$17–$29$12–$19
Total per unit (reorder, 60 pcs)$12–$18$17–$29 (design cost ×1)$10–$15

OEM reorders are cheaper because the tech pack, pattern, and sample are already approved. ODM reorders of the same design are also cheaper after the first run — but each new ODM design incurs the upfront design cost again.

Key Decision Factors

IP Ownership: OEM gives you 100% ownership of the design and patterns. If you plan to source from multiple factories eventually, start with OEM.
Speed to Market: ODM is faster because Linenwind's design team works from established patterns and fabric stock. Concept-to-bulk can be 3–4 weeks faster than pure OEM.
Cost of Design Mistakes: OBM designs are pre-tested — they have already sold in similar markets. Risk of a design-flop is lower than starting from scratch in OEM or ODM.
Exclusivity: Only OEM guarantees exclusivity. ODM exclusivity must be negotiated per design and may be limited to your market or region. OBM is never exclusive.
What to Prepare: OEM requires a tech pack (sketches, measurements, BOM). ODM requires a concept brief (mood board, references, budget). OBM requires only a brand name for labeling.
